A Heartbreaking Sight: German Shepherd Found Distressed in Crate on Back of RV
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, Heather Peters was driving along Highway 1 near Abbotsford, British Columbia, when her heart sank. Strapped to the rear luggage platform of an RV in front of her was a crate, and inside, a distressed dog panted with its tongue hanging out.
Peters couldn’t bear the thought of an animal suffering in the summer heat. She pulled over and watched in horror as the dog, a large German shepherd, struggled to stand up and kept falling over. Clearly, it was in dire need of help.
Without hesitation, Peters contacted the police and followed the RV to get a license plate number and photograph. Determined to ensure the dog’s safety, she shared her findings with authorities.
Meanwhile, Lisa Bohn and her husband also witnessed the alarming sight. “We both looked at each other and said, ‘Is that a dog carrier on the back of the trailer?'” Bohn recalled. They pulled up alongside the RV and confirmed their worst fears: a dog was indeed trapped in the crate, drenched in sweat and struggling to breathe.
Bohn and her husband broke down in tears as they reported the cruelty to the police. They couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the dog in such a dangerous situation.
As the day wore on, the RV was spotted again, this time at 8:30pm. Police were called once more, but unfortunately, the vehicle had disappeared by the time they arrived.
However, investigators determined that the RV was registered to a business and eventually located the dog’s owner. On Wednesday, June 30, the BC SPCA obtained a warrant to seize the animal, offering it a safe haven and much-needed medical attention.
“The dog is safe and is being cared for by the SPCA in an undisclosed location,” the BC SPCA announced. “The dog is not available for adoption at this time as we have to follow the legal steps in the process before he is ours to rehome.”
The BC SPCA strongly condemned the incident and is recommending animal cruelty charges against the dog’s owner. This heartbreaking story is a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and reporting animal abuse when it occurs.
