Iowa Police Officer Fatally Shoots Family Dog, Sparks Outrage
In a shocking incident, an Iowa police officer has been identified as the culprit behind the fatal shooting of a family dog. Amidst the outrage sparked by this tragic event, another revelation has come to light: the same officer was involved in a separate dog-related incident just over a month prior.
On August 21st, Officer Ethan Bock responded to a call regarding four allegedly aggressive dogs at large. While investigating, Bock encountered a dog that approached him aggressively. According to the Davenport Police Department, the officer opened fire, killing the dog.
However, the family of the dog owner, Don Hesseltine, released their own footage of the encounter. In the video, Bock is seen driving by and instructing the two young children present to put their dog on a leash. As they comply, Bock exits his vehicle and approaches their home.
The dog, a two-year-old named Myst, runs towards Bock, who responds by drawing his gun and firing, directly in front of the children and their mother. The shooting sends the children into a frenzy of screams and sobs, and Myst is seen limping into the house before collapsing and dying on the porch.
Outrage ensued on social media, with many demanding Bock’s dismissal. Local authorities initially defended the officer, stating that his actions were justified based on a review of the facts. However, the release of Bock’s body-worn camera footage further fueled public anger.
In the video, critics argue that Bock was not in any imminent danger and that he unnecessarily exited his vehicle, escalating the situation. They also point out that the children present could have easily been harmed in the crossfire.
Adding to the controversy, it was revealed that Officer Bock was also involved in another dog-related incident on July 13th. C’edward Spears, the dog’s owner in that case, told reporters that he was taking his unleashed dog out for trash when he encountered Bock. Despite Spears’ warning about his dog, Bock proceeded to speed up and run over the animal.
The body-worn camera footage from that incident shows Bock exiting his vehicle and telling the distressed Spears, “That’s why you gotta have your dog on a leash, bro.”
These incidents have raised serious questions about the use of force by police officers, particularly in situations involving animals. The Davenport Police Department has initiated an internal investigation, and the family of Myst has organized a GoFundMe to cover legal expenses as they seek justice for their beloved pet.
The tragic loss of these two dogs has ignited a public outcry, with many demanding accountability and the implementation of appropriate guidelines for police interactions with animals. As the ongoing investigations unfold, the community waits with uncertainty for answers and a resolution to these disturbing events.
