Woofy Acres Dog Rescue Under Investigation for Neglect
Woofy Acres, a dog rescue organization, has come under fire after a criminal investigation was launched into allegations of severe neglect at their shelter in Pinon Hills, California. In mid-July, San Bernardino County Animal Care seized 114 dogs from the facility, most of which were Pit Bulls with aggressive behavior and serious health issues.
Overcrowding and Substandard Conditions
County officials revealed that the dogs were living in “inadequate conditions” at Woofy Acres’ overcapacity kennel. The shelter was reportedly overcrowded and unsanitary.
Tragic Outcome for Seized Dogs
Sadly, due to their aggressive nature and declining health, 93 of the 114 seized dogs were euthanized. County animal care spokesperson Francis Delapaz reported that 19 dogs have been placed, while a Pit Bull Terrier and a Shepherd mix remain available for adoption.
Outrage from Animal Advocates
The news of Woofy Acres’ alleged neglect has sparked outrage among animal advocates and shelter workers. Heather McDermott-Perez, a volunteer with Orange County Animal Care, condemned the organization’s actions, demanding that they be prevented from pulling dogs in the future.
Orange County Animal Care had placed 149 dogs with Woofy Acres, the last one as recently as January of this year.
Emaciated Dogs and Abandoned Charges
Lauren Cardona, co-founder of Saving Devore Dogs, provided additional insights into the appalling conditions at Woofy Acres. She described one of the seized dogs, Checkers, as emaciated and “literally like looking at a skeleton with skin over it.” Cardona also noted that the Pinon Hills property was located in a remote desert area, raising concerns about the dogs’ ability to survive.
Earlier in the year, Woofy Acres made headlines after abandoning 32 dogs at a dog grooming and boarding business in Rowland Heights. “We don’t understand how anyone would think this is OK,” said a Shanderin Kennels employee. The business reportedly charged Bedford nearly $40,000 for caring for the abandoned dogs.
Specialized in Aggressive Dogs
A Reddit thread revealed that Woofy Acres had a history of “pulling drama dogs – biters, big aggression, big fear, non-adoptable dogs.”
Delinquent Status with State
The San Bernardino Sun reported that Woofy Acres has a “delinquent status” with the state Attorney’s General Office, meaning they are prohibited from soliciting or disbursing donations.
Call to Action
This shocking incident highlights the importance of thorough background checks before surrendering animals to rescue organizations. It also underscores the need for strict regulations and enforcement to ensure the well-being of animals under the care of such facilities.
