Tragic Tale: Dog Owner Faces Jail Time for Overfeeding

In a sobering reminder of pet ownership responsibilities, a New Zealand woman has been sentenced to jail for overfeeding her dog, Nuggi, to the point of death.

The Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) revealed that the owner pleaded guilty to failing to provide adequate care, leading to the dog’s demise.

Nuggi, a beloved canine companion, weighed a staggering 118 pounds when he was rescued by SPCA in October 2021. His former owner admitted to feeding him an excessive diet of up to 10 chicken pieces daily, supplemented by dog treats. While she claimed to exercise him by walking and outdoor playtime, it was evidently insufficient.

“This is unacceptable,” decried SPCA Chief Executive Todd Westwood. “Responsible pet ownership entails ensuring proper nutrition and exercise, which was woefully neglected in this case.”

SPCA animal control officers described Nuggi’s condition as “heartbreaking.” As they escorted him to their vehicle, he was winded after only a few short steps. His obesity was so severe that it muffled his heartbeats on the stethoscope.

Beyond weight issues, Nuggi suffered from numerous health complications. His legs buckled under his colossal weight, his nails overgrown, and he displayed skin tags and conjunctivitis.

“Nuggi was one of the most obese animals we’ve ever encountered,” Westwood lamented, adding that even their experienced staff was shocked.

“While we regularly see undernourished and malnourished pets, it’s equally distressing to witness extreme overfeeding,” he said.

Nuggi spent two months in SPCA care, shedding 19 pounds before his tragic passing due to an acute hemorrhage from a liver mass. A necropsy revealed additional health ailments, including liver disease and Cushing’s disease.

This tragic incident underscores the paramount importance of providing our furry friends with appropriate nutrition and exercise. Pet ownership is a commitment to their well-being, and we must fulfill it responsibly. Let Nuggi’s story serve as a poignant reminder to prevent such heart-wrenching consequences in the future.
